In class this week, the fourth-grade children participated in Tar Wars, a tobacco-free education program from the American Academy of Family Physicians. The presenters were Christiana Care Resident physicians. Tar Wars is designed specifically elementary grade students. The program is a great first step and very worthwhile when you read the statistics Tar Wars presents on tobacco use. Approximately 90 percent of all tobacco users started at or before the age of 18.One-fifth of our children are current smokers by the time they leave high school.Children are twice as likely as adults to recall tobacco advertising.More than five million children alive today will die prematurely from smoking-related illnesses. A special thanks to the fourth-grade teachers who arranged their schedules to accommodate the program’s presentation. Mrs. Terry DeLorbe
